These tracks, called Dimetropus, are from the world-famous Robledo Mountains megatracksite in Dona Ana County, New Mexico. This particular trackway consists of more than a dozen rock slabs. This tracksite is Early Permian in age (approximately 295 million years old). The tracksite was formed on the ancient tidal flats on the edge of an early Permian sea which covered the southernmost part of what would later become New Mexico.
Paleontologists use one scientific name for tracks and a different one for the animals that made the tracks. Animals called sphenacodonts made these kind of tracks. The most famous sphenacodont is Dimetrodon, the sail-backed reptile. |
